And let all darkness wait for him: a fire that burns not out shall consume him; and let a stranger plague his house.
Greek · Septuagintπᾶν δὲ σκότος αὐτῷ ὑπομείναι· κατέδεται αὐτὸν πῦρ ἄκαυστον, κακώσαι δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπήλυτος τὸν οἶκον.
And let the heaven reveal his iniquities, and the earth rise up against him.

Let destruction bring his house to an end; let a day of wrath come upon him.

But Job answered and said,

Hear ye, hear ye my words, that I may not have this consolation from you.
Greek · SeptuagintἈκούσατε ἀκούσατέ μου τῶν λόγων, ἵνα μὴ ᾖ μοι παρʼ ὑμῶν αὕτη ἡ παράκλησις.
Raise me, and I will speak; then ye shall not laugh me to scorn.
Greek · SeptuagintἌρατέ με, ἐγὼ δὲ λαλήσω, εἶτʼ οὐ καταγελάσετέ μου.
What! is my reproof of man? and why should I not be angry?
Greek · SeptuagintΤί γάρ; μὴ ἀνθρώπου μου ἡ ἔλεγξις; ἢ διὰ τί οὐ θυμωθήσομαι;
Look upon me, and wonder, laying your hand upon your cheek.

For even when I remember, I am alarmed, and pains seize my flesh.

Wherefore do the ungodly live, and grow old even in wealth?
Greek · SeptuagintΔιὰ τί ἀσεβεῖς ζῶσι, πεπαλαίωνται δὲ καὶ ἐν πλούτῳ;
Their seed is according to [their] desire, and their children are in [their] sight.
Greek · SeptuagintὉ σπόρος αὐτῶν κατὰ ψυχὴν, τὰ δὲ τέκνα αὐτῶν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς.
Their houses are prosperous, neither [have they] any where [cause for] fear, neither is there a scourge from the Lord upon them.
Greek · SeptuagintΟἱ οἶκοι αὐτῶν εὐθηνοῦσι, φόβος δὲ οὐδαμοῦ, μάστιξ δὲ παρὰ Κυρίου οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπʼ αὐτοῖς.
Their cow does not cast her calf, and their [beast] with young is safe, and does not miscarry.

And they remain as an unfailing flock, and their children play before [them], taking up the psaltery and harp;

and they rejoice at the voice of a song.

And they spend their days in wealth, and fall asleep in the rest of the grave.
Greek · SeptuagintΣυνετέλεσαν δὲ ἐν ἀγαθοῖς τὸν βίον αὐτῶν, ἐν δὲ ἀναπαύσει ᾅδου ἐκοιμήθησαν.
Yet [such a man] says to the Lord, Depart from me; I desire not to know thy ways.
Greek · SeptuagintΛέγει δὲ Κυρίῳ, ἀπόστα ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ, ὁδούς σου εἰδέναι οὐ βούλομαι.
What is the Mighty One, that we should serve him? and what profit is there that we should approach him?
Greek · SeptuagintΤί ἱκανὸς, ὅτι δουλεύσομεν αὐτῷ; καὶ τίς ὠφέλεια, ὅτι ἀπαντήσομεν αὐτῷ;
For their good things were in [their] hands, but he regards not the works of the ungodly.
Greek · SeptuagintἘν χερσὶ γὰρ ἦν αὐτῶν τὰ ἀγαθὰ, ἔργα δὲ ἀσεβῶν οὐκ ἐφορᾷ.
Nevertheless, the lamp of the ungodly also shall be put out, and destruction shall come upon them, and pangs of vengeance shall seize them.
Greek · SeptuagintΟὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀσεβῶν λύχνος σβεσθήσεται, ἐπελεύσεται δὲ αὐτοῖς ἡ καταστροφὴ, ὠδῖνες δὲ αὐτοὺς ἕξουσιν ἀπὸ ὀργῆς.
And they shall be as chaff before the wind, or as dust which the storm has taken up.

Let his substance fail [to supply] his children: [God] shall recompense him, and he shall know it.

Let his eyes see his own destruction, and let him not be saved by the Lord.

For his desire is in his house with him, and the number of his months has been suddenly cut off.

Is it not the Lord who teaches understanding and knowledge? and does not he judge murders?

One shall die in his perfect strength, and wholly at ease and prosperous;

and his inwards are full of fat, and his marrow is diffused [throughout him].

And another dies in bitterness of soul, not eating any good thing.

But they lie down in the earth together, and corruption covers them.
Greek · SeptuagintὉμοθυμαδὸν δὲ ἐπὶ γῆς κοιμῶνται, σαπρία δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐκάλυψεν.
So I know you, that ye presumptuously attack me:
Greek · SeptuagintὭστε οἶδα ὑμᾶς, ὅτι τόλμῃ ἐπίκεισθέ μοι·
so that ye will say, Where is the house of the prince? and where is the covering of the tabernacles of the ungodly?
Greek · SeptuagintὭστε ἐρεῖτε, ποῦ ἐστιν οἶκος ἄρχοντος; καὶ ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ σκέπη τῶν σκηνωμάτων τῶν ἀσεβῶν;
Ask those that go by the way, and do not disown their tokens.
Greek · SeptuagintἘρωτήσατε παραπορευομένους ὁδὸν, καὶ τὰ σημεῖα αὐτῶν οὐκ ἀπαλλοτριώσετε.
For the wicked hastens to the day of destruction: they shall be led away for the day of his vengeance.
Greek · SeptuagintὍτι εἰς ἡμέραν ἀπωλείας κουφίζεται ὁ πονηρὸς, εἰς ἡμέραν ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ ἀπαχθήσονται.
Who will tell him his way to his face, whereas he has done [it]? who shall recompense him?

And he has been led away to the tombs, and he has watched over the heaps.

Then Eliphaz the Thæmanite answered and said,

Is it not the Lord that teaches understanding and knowledge?

For what matters it to the Lord, if thou wert blameless in [thy] works? or is it profitable that thou shouldest perfect thy way?
Greek · SeptuagintΤί γὰρ μέλει τῷ Κυρίῳ, ἐὰν σὺ ἦσθα τοῖς ἔργοις ἄμεμπτος; ἢ ὠφέλεια, ὅτι ἀπλώσῃς τὴν ὁδόν σου;
Wilt thou maintain and plead thine own cause? and will he enter into judgment with thee?
Greek · SeptuagintἪ λόγον σου ποιοῦμενος ἐλέγξεις, καὶ συνεισελεύσεταί σοι εἰς κρίσιν;
Is not thy wickedness abundant, and thy sins innumerable?
Greek · SeptuagintΠότερον οὐχ ἡ κακία σου ἐστὶ πολλὴ, ἀναρίθμητοι δέ σου εἰσὶν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι;
And thou hast taken security of thy brethren for nothing, and hast taken away the clothing of the naked.
Greek · SeptuagintἨνεχύραζες δὲ τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου διακενῆς, ἀμφίασιν δὲ γυμνῶν ἀφείλου.
Neither hast thou given water to the thirsty to drink, but hast taken away the morsel of the hungry.
Greek · SeptuagintΟὐδὲ ὕδωρ διψῶντας ἐπότισας, ἀλλὰ πεινώντων ἐστέρησας ψωμόν·
And thou hast accepted the persons of some; and thou hast established those [that were already settled] on the earth.
Greek · SeptuagintἘθαύμασας δέ τινων πρόσωπον, ᾤκισας δὲ τοὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
But thou hast sent widows away empty, and hast afflicted orphans.
Greek · SeptuagintΧήρας δὲ ἐξαπέστειλας κενὰς, ὀρφανοὺς δὲ ἐκάκωσας.
Therefore snares have compassed thee, and disastrous war has troubled thee.
Greek · SeptuagintΤοιγαροῦν ἐκύκλωσάν σε παγίδες, καὶ ἐσπούδασέ σε πόλεμος ἐξαίσιος.
The light has proved darkness to thee, and water has covered thee on thy lying down.
Greek · SeptuagintΤὸ φῶς σοι σκότος ἀπέβη, κοιμηθέντα δὲ ὕδωρ σε ἐκάλυψε.
Does not he that dwells in the high places observe? and has he not brought down the proud?
Greek · SeptuagintΜὴ οὐχὶ ὁ τὰ ὑψηλὰ ναίων ἐφορᾷ; τοὺς δὲ ὕβρει φερομένους ἐταπείνωσε;
And thou hast said, What does the Mighty One know? does he judge in the dark?
Greek · SeptuagintΚαὶ εἶπας, τί ἔγνω ὁ ἰσχυρός; ἢ κατὰ τοῦ γνόφου κρίνει;
A cloud is his hiding-place, and he shall not be seen; and he passes through the circle of heaven.
Greek · SeptuagintΝεφέλη ἀποκρυφὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐχ ὁραθήσεται, καὶ γῦρον οὐρανοῦ διαπορεύεται.
Wilt thou [not] mark the old way, which righteous men have trodden?
Greek · SeptuagintΜὴ τρίβον αἰώνιον φυλάξεις, ἣν ἐπάτησαν ἄνδρες δίκαιοι,
who were seized before their time: their foundations [are as] an overflowing stream.
Greek · Septuagintοἳ συνελήφθησαν ἄωροι; ποταμὸς ἐπιῤῥέων οἱ θεμέλιοι αὐτῶν,
Who say, What will the Lord do to us? or what will the Almighty bring upon us?
Greek · Septuagintοἱ λέγοντες, Κύριος τί ποιήσει ἡμῖν; ἢ τί ἐπάξεται ἡμῖν ὁ παντοκράτωρ;
Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from him.
Greek · SeptuagintὋς δὲ ἐνέπλησε τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν ἀγαθῶν, βουλὴ δὲ ἀσεβῶν πόῤῥω ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ.
The righteous have seen [it], and laughed, and the blameless one has derided [them].
Greek · SeptuagintἸδόντες δίκαιοι ἐγέλασαν, ἄμεμπτος δὲ ἐμυκτήρισεν.
Verily their substance has been utterly destroyed, and the fire shall devour what is left of their [property].
Greek · SeptuagintΕἰ μὴ ἠφανίσθη ἡ ὑπόστασις αὐτῶν, καὶ τὸ κατάλειμμα αὐτῶν καταφάγεται πῦρ.
Be firm, I pray thee, if thou canst endure; then thy fruit shall prosper.

And receive a declaration from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
Greek · SeptuagintἜκλαβε δὲ ἐκ στόματος αὐτοῦ ἐξηγορίαν, καὶ ἀνάλαβε τὰ ῥήματα αὐτοῦ ἐν καρδίᾳ σου.
And if thou shalt turn and humble thyself before the Lord, thou hast [thus] removed unrighteousness far from thy habitation.
Greek · SeptuagintἘὰν δὲ ἐπιστραφῇς καὶ ταπεινώσῃς σεαυτὸν ἔναντι Κυρίου, πόῤῥω ἐποίησας ἀπὸ διαίτης σου ἄδικον.
Thou shalt lay up for thyself [treasure] in a heap on the rock; and Sophir [shall be] as the rock of the torrent.

So the Almighty shall be thy helper from enemies, and he shall bring thee forth pure as silver that has been tried by fire.
Greek · SeptuagintἜσται οὖν σου ὁ παντοκράτωρ βοηθὸς ἀπὸ ἐχθρῶν, καθαρὸν δὲ ἀποδώσει σε ὥσπερ ἀργύριον πεπυρωμένον.
Then shalt thou have boldness before the Lord, looking up cheerfully to heaven.

And he shall establish to thee again a habitation of righteousness and there shall be light upon thy paths.
Greek · SeptuagintἈποκαταστήσει δέ σοι δίαιταν δικαιοσύνης, ἐπὶ δὲ ὁδοῖς σου ἔσται φέγγος·
Because thou hast humbled thyself; and thou shalt say, [Man] has behaved proudly, but he shall save him that is of lowly eyes.
Greek · SeptuagintὍτι ἐταπείνωσας σεαυτὸν, καὶ ἐρεῖς, ὑπερηφανεύσατο, καὶ κύφοντα ὀφθαλμοῖς σώσει.
He shall deliver the innocent, and do thou save thyself by thy pure hands.
Greek · SeptuagintῬύσεται ἀθῶον, καὶ διασώθητι ἐν καθαραῖς χερσί σου.
Then Job answered and said,
Greek · SeptuagintὙπολαβὼν δὲ Ἰὼβ, λέγει,
Yea, I know that pleading is out of my reach; and his hand has been made heavy upon my groaning.
Greek · SeptuagintΚαὶ δὴ οἶδα ὅτι ἐκ χειρός μου ἡ ἔλεγξίς ἐστι, καὶ ἡ χεὶρ αὐτοῦ βαρεῖα γέγονεν ἐπʼ ἐμῷ στεναγμῷ.
Who would then know that I might find him, and come to an end [of the matter]?
Greek · SeptuagintΤίς δʼ ἄρα γνοίη, ὅτι εὕροιμι αὐτὸν, καὶ ἔλθοιμι εἰς τέλος;
And I would plead my own cause, and he would fill my mouth with arguments.
Greek · SeptuagintΕἴποιμι δὲ ἐμαυτοῦ κρίμα, τὸ δὲ στόμα μου ἐμπλήσαι ἐλέγχων.
And I would know the remedies which he would speak to me, and I would perceive what he would tell me.
Greek · SeptuagintΓνοίην δὲ ἰάματα ἅ μοι ἐρεῖ, αἰσθοίμην δὲ τίνα μοι ἀπαγγελεῖ.
Though he should come on me in [his] great strength, then he would not threaten me;
Greek · SeptuagintΚαὶ ἐν πολλῇ ἰσχύϊ ἐπελεύσεταί μοι, εἶτα ἐν ἀπειλῇ μοι οὐ χρήσεται.
for truth and reproof are from him; and he would bring forth my judgment to an end.
Greek · SeptuagintἈλήθεια γὰρ καὶ ἔλεγχος παρʼ αὐτοῦ, ἐξαγάγοι δὲ εἰς τέλος τὸ κρίμα μου.
For if I shall go first, and exist no longer, still what do I know [concerning] the latter end?
Greek · SeptuagintΕἰ γὰρ πρῶτος πορεύσομαι, καὶ οὐκ ἔτι εἰμὶ, τὰ δὲ ἐπʼ ἐσχάτοις, τί οἶδα;
When he wrought on the left hand, then I observed [it] not: his right hand shall encompass me but I shall not see [it].
Greek · SeptuagintἈριστερὰ ποιήσαντος αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ κατέσχον, περιβαλεῖ δεξιὰ καὶ οὐκ ὄψομαι·
For he knows already my way; and he has tried me as gold.
Greek · SeptuagintΟἶδε γὰρ ἤδη ὁδόν μου· διέκρινε δέ με ὥσπερ τὸ χρυσίον.
And I will go forth according to his commandments, for I have kept his ways; and I shall not turn aside from his commandments,
Greek · SeptuagintἘξελεύσομαι δὲ ἐν ἐντάλμασιν αὐτοῦ, ὁδοὺς γὰρ αὐτοῦ ἐφύλαξα, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκκλίνω ἀπὸ ἐνταλμάτων αὐτοῦ,
neither shall I transgress; but I have hid his words in my bosom.
Greek · Septuagintκαὶ οὐ μὴ παρέλθω, ἐν δὲ κόλπῳ μου ἔκρυψα ῥήματα αὐτοῦ.
And if too he has thus judged, who is he that has contradicted, for he has both willed [a thing] and done it.
Greek · SeptuagintΕἰ δὲ καὶ αὐτὸς ἔκρινεν οὕτως, τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἀντειπὼν αὐτῷ; ὁ γὰρ αὐτὸς ἠθέλησε, καὶ ἐποίησε.
Therefore am I troubled at him; and when I was reproved, I thought of him.
Greek · SeptuagintΔιὰ τοῦτο ἐπʼ αὐτῷ ἐσπούδακα· νουθετούμενος δὲ, ἐφρόντισα αὐτοῦ.
But the Lord has softened my heart, and the Almighty has troubled me.
Greek · SeptuagintΚύριος δὲ ἐμαλάκυνε τὴν καρδίαν μου· ὁ δὲ παντοκράτωρ ἐσπούδασέ με.
For I knew not that darkness would come upon me, and thick darkness has covered [me] before my face.
Greek · SeptuagintΟὐ γὰρ ᾔδειν ὅτι ἐπελεύσεταί μοι σκότος, πρὸ προσώπου δέ μου ἐκάλυψε γνόφος.
But why have the seasons been hidden from the Lord,
Greek · SeptuagintΔιατί δὲ Κύριον ἔλαθον ὧραι,
while the ungodly have passed over the bound, carrying off the flock with the shepherd?
Greek · Septuagintἀσεβεῖς δὲ ὅριον ὑπερέβησαν, ποίμνιον σὺν ποιμένι ἁρπάσαντες;
They have led away the ass of the fatherless, and taken the widow's ox for a pledge.
Greek · SeptuagintὙποζύγιον ὀρφανῶν ἀπήγαγον, καὶ βοῦν χήρας ἠνεχύρασαν.
They have turned aside the weak from the right way: and the meek of the earth have hidden themselves together.
Greek · SeptuagintἘξέκλιναν ἀδυνάτους ἐξ ὁδοῦ δικαίας, ὁμοθυμαδὸν δὲ ἐκρύβησαν πρᾳεῖς γῆς.
And they have departed like asses in the field, having gone forth on my account according to their own order: his bread is sweet to [his] little ones.
Greek · SeptuagintἈπέβησαν δὲ ὥσπερ ὄνοι ἐν ἀγρῷ, ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ ἐξελθόντες τὴν ἑαυτῶν τάξιν· ἡδύνθη αὐτῷ ἄρτος εἰς νεωτέρους.
They have reaped a field that was not their own before the time: the poor have laboured in the vineyards of the ungodly without pay and without food.
